Last week, a game between the White Sox and Orioles ended with an absurd interference call on an infield fly rule that was a total ump show. While this play didn’t end the game, a very similar scenario cost the New York Yankees a potential big inning on Wednesday evening against the Angels.
The Bronx Bombers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first, bringing up Giancarlo Stanton as they looked to put a crooked number up on the scoreboard. But, when Stanton popped up to shortstop, chaos ensued.
Take a look at the play.

What exactly is Soto doing wrong here? He’s literally standing on the bag when the contact occurs. Should he be standing off the bag so that Zach Neto can catch the ball and immediately double him off? Yes, he could’ve to the bag faster, but clearly Neto didn’t have a great beat on the ball and Soto could’ve looked to advance.
Plus, the Angels ended up not losing anything due to the contact. Since it was an infield fly rule, the out on the catch was already recorded, and nobody advanced. Seems like it would’ve been pretty easy for the umpire to just ignore the contact and grant the out. Instead, Soto was called for interference, manager Aaron Boone was ejected, and the Yankees ended up not scoring at all after Alex Verdugo ended up grounding out to first.
This is eerily similar to this play from last week.
