We’re about a week away from the start of the NHL season and I for one could not be more amped that hockey is finally back even though I’m still trying to mend my broken heart after the Bruins failed to bring the Stanley Cup back to Boston.
Over the past few weeks, teams around the league have played a number of virtually meaningless games as they try to figure out their rosters so you can be excused if you’ve decided to do literally anything else with your time instead of tuning in to the preseason.
I’m going to assume most of the people reading this weren’t watching last night when the Jets faced off against the Oilers in Winnipeg, and if that is indeed that case with you, you missed out on a truly bizarre moment courtesy of Mark Letestu.
Shortly after the puck dropped on the third period, the Jets forward skated back to the bench, where he proceeded to suck down a packet of yellow mustard like an absolute savage.

Plenty of viewers were understandably perplexed, but after doing a bit of research, it turns out there may have been some sort of method behind the madness.
If the people at Harvard Medical School are to be believed, the power of mustard can be harnessed to reduce cramping (the theory is that the flavor triggers ions that communicate with the central nervous system, which tells the neurons responsible for cramping to chill out).
Still, I feel like there has to be a better way to prevent cramps—like the many electrolyte-filled products on the market that are specifically engineered to do exactly that.
With that said, Letestu is a professional hockey player and I am not so he must be doing something right.
