Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has accomplished a lot over the past two seasons with the team. The 39-year-old now says, he’ll be doing the job until he physically can’t anymore.
“They’re gonna have to carry me out of here in a casket,” Taylor said, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I love it.
Just specifically, Cincinnati. It’s a really good fit for my family and myself, and the other coaches, and the owners, and (Bengals director of player personnel) Duke Tobin. I just can’t imagine myself anywhere else. They’ll have to kick me out of here.”Taylor is 27-13 the past two seasons including the playoffs, and he and Joe Burrow took the Bengals to the AFC Championship game twice, with a Super Bowl appearance.
After the 2021 season concluded, the team rewarded Taylor with a contract extension through 2026. While the details were not disclosed, prior to the extension, Taylor’s $3.5 million annual salary was the lowest amongst the 32 NFL head coaches.
Coaches in professional sports often make statements expressing their commitment to their team and city, especially when asked about their future plans.
It’s not uncommon for coaches to develop strong connections to their teams and cities, and many choose to stay with their teams for long periods of time. However, it’s also worth noting that the sports industry can be unpredictable, and coaches can be fired or leave for other opportunities.
Ultimately, only time will tell whether Zac Taylor will remain with the Bengals for the rest of his career.
For now, Taylor’s quote “They’re Gonna Have To Carry Me Out Of Here In A Casket” reminds us of Leonardo DiCaprio’s speech from the Wolf of Wall Street, colorful language and all.
