Simply put, Caitlin Clark is the biggest name in women’s basketball today.
In fact, Clark is one of the biggest names in sports these days.
So when ESPN and Omaha Productions released its four-part docuseries entitled ‘Full Court Press’ over the weekend, some fans were surprised to see fellow stars Kamilla Cardoso and Kiki Rice featured alongside Clark.
But according to head of production Therese Andrews, there’s a good reason for that.
“Well, you know, when we were early in development, we of course went back and forth a little bit on what is the best series that would show the extensive nature of women’s college basketball,” Andrews told Front Office Sports. “And though Caitlin is obviously a good vantage point into that, it felt really important for us to make sure that we were really balancing different characters and understanding their archetypes and their vantage points into the sport.
“So Caitlin is obviously really impressive, but without Kiki and Kamilla, we wouldn’t really have the depth of character and understanding of the sport in its full complexity. It felt really important to make sure that we were doing that properly.”
Caitlin Clark’s Immense Success Made ‘Full Court Press’ Production Difficult
Clark won every national player of the year award there was to win in both 2023 and 2024. She became women’s college basketball’s all-time leading scorer. And she went No. 1 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
For Andrews and company, this made life difficult when deciding what to cover and how much to cover.
“Honestly, this show was a wild ride in preproduction of figuring out ‘How many days do we need to cover? How important is the regular season? How important is March Madness,” she said. “So it was a complex strategy session to really think through how to approach all three of them. Early on in development, Kristen Lappas—our director, who’s absolutely wonderful and such a superstar—spent a lot of time working through the story angles that we wanted to approach and how many days and what type of access we needed.”
Ultimately, some things needed to be cut. Including a viral clip of Clark cursing up a storm after a loss to Nebraska.
But the end result is an enthralling look behind the scenes at perhaps the most-interesting season in women’s college basketball history.
