Nebraska Coaching Legend John Cook’s New Contract Hints At End Of The NCAA

The days of the NCAA overseeing college athletics are numbered if a new contract for Nebraska women’s volleyball coach John Cook is any indication.

Cook, a four-time national champion, agreed to a new long-term deal with the Huskers on Thursday.

But it was specific language in the contract that caught the eyes of some keen readers.

If Mr. Cook terminates employment as head coach of the program prior to January 31, 2029 and accepts employment as a coach with a member school of the NCAA or a successor organization…” the contract

, according to Lincoln Journal Star columnist Amie Just.

Interesting. Very interesting.

Nebraska doesn’t want Cook to leave for any other college program. And Cook probably wouldn’t leave for any other college program. After all, the Cornhuskers have been immensely successful and invested a ton in the program.

But it’s clear that both universities and their lawyers are prepping for a post-NCAA world.

The new deal comes at a time when the NCAA’s grip on college athletics is as weak as its ever been. Courts across the country have repeatedly cut the legs out of the NCAA’s ability to govern over student-athletes and institutions.

It also reached a recent settlement that would see the NCAA and its member institutions pay out $2.8 billion in back pay to athletes who were not allowed to receive NIL compensation.

Though schools and athletic departments have already begun working on ways around the newest rule set.

The overwhelming assumption is that Congress will have to take over control of college athletics oversight if they’re to have any hope of survival.

Doing so would make the NCAA redundant. Schools realize this.

So you can expect the clause and phrasing in Cook’s contract to become commonplace going forward.

Meanwhile, the NCAA is left to wait around and count the days before it goes extinct.
