If you weren’t logged on right when it went on sale then chances are you missed your chance to purchase the latest release from Frey Ranch Farmers + Distillers, a limited-edition 100% Wheat Whiskey Single Barrel release clocking in at a spicy 134.
4-proof.This ultra-premium 100% Wheat Whiskey Single Barrel release is proof, in my humble opinion, that those who are out there claiming the current bourbon boom (whiskey boom, whatever, you get the point) is a bubble simply are not reading the room but I say that not because this release had a lot of hype or because it sold out within minutes, I say that because this limited-edition Frey Ranch whiskey is proof that there is still a LOT LOT LOT of great whiskey yet to be made in the United States and some insanely good barrels are aging out there just ripening to perfection.
The Frey Ranch 100% Wheat Whiskey Single Barrel #1208 was aged for 6 years and 2 months. I was fortunate enough to get an advance sample of this which I cracked open last weekend for the Kentucky Derby.
Frey Ranch described this single barrel release as a “Sugar Bomb” which in hindsight seems accurate but the butterscotch, milk chocolate, and frosting flavors aren’t subdued by the heat. At 134.48-proof there’s a good Kentucky hug on the way down with this 100% Wheat Whiskey.
When I say that there’s still A LOT of great whiskey left to be bottled in America, Frey Ranch is a perfect example of that. Frey Ranch Distillery is a farm-to-glass producer and 100% soft white winter wheat was grown on the Frey Ranch farm before being used in this whiskey.
Knowing they had something special with the 100% wheat grown on site, after sitting in a barrel for 6 years and 2 months this became the first cask strength release from Frey’s Single Grain Series and the timing couldn’t have been any better as it was released to celebrate the 10th anniversary for the distillery in Fallon, Nevada which is about 65 miles East of Reno and nearly 400-mile drive northwest from Las Vegas.
While the Frey Ranch limited-edition 100% Wheat Whiskey Single Barrel sold out within minutes, I still suggest checking out their website for information on future single barrel releases.
And if you see this bottle out in the wild, pick it up. Truly. It’s something special and I really enjoyed sharing with friends on Kentucky Derby Day as the flavor explosion was a truly perfect example of how exceptional wheat whiskies can be and I know I converted a handful of friends into wheat whiskey fans from this release along.
