Yes, the Herschel Walker trade that sent the Cowboys star running back to the Vikings and rejuvenated the Dallas franchise was now nearly 25-years-ago. But, after the Russell Wilson-Broncos trade has finally imploded, it’s back in the spotlight.
Russell Wilson was traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos prior to the 2022 season for a boatload of picks.
But, after Wilson was released on Monday, the trade was officially a bloodbath. So … who won the Russell Wilson trade? #Broncos | #Seahawks | #NFL pic.twitter.com/x8bFnmP0F7

Yeah, that’s a bloodbath. The Seahawks were drawing dead two years ago, but are now in a good spot with a ton of young talent. The Broncos, meanwhile, are in deep trouble, with a record amount of dead money on Wilson’s contract.
Naturally, the sports talk shows have been discussing whether the Russell Wilson trade is the worst in NFL history. Frankly, I don’t think it’s even close. Wilson wasn’t great in Denver, but he honestly wasn’t all that bad in 2023. Most of the dysfunction seemed franchise-wide in 2022 after they hired Nathaniel Hackett. And, it became clear quickly that current head coach Sean Payton didn’t want Wilson long-term.
Whenever anyone talks about terrible NFL trades, the Herschel Walker trade has to be brought up. The Cowboys used that trade to create the backbone of a dynasty that won three Super Bowls during the 1990’s. It was a terrible trade, to say the least.
How bad was it? ESPN analyst and NFL expert Louis Riddick said that no one involved in the trade should’ve been allowed in football in any capacity.
Louis Riddick has strong feelings about the Vikings trading for Herschel Walker in 1989.
"If you are able to agree to this kind of trade as a general manager, you should never ever ever again be allowed anywhere near an NFL building. Ever. You shouldn't be allowed to play… pic.twitter.com/9OM2WiuvBp

That may be a little harsh, but it truly was a bad trade. If you’re the Broncos, it can’t feel good to be talked about in the same conversations as the Herschel Walker trade.
