Former #1 overall pick Jared Goff knows what top QB prospects Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye have in store for them after Thursday’s NFL draft.
Earlier this week, we spoke briefly with the Lions QB, who recently partnered with Jared Jewelers to hold an event in Detroit during NFL draft week to honor Lions fans.
According to Goff, Williams, Maye, and other top quarterbacks in the draft can expect the game to move faster in the pros than it does in college.
“I think the defensive ends just kind of get to you a little bit faster than they do in college, and that’s always different. The windows close a little bit quicker down the field. It’s the speed of the game. It speeds up and you have to process things a little bit faster.”
Goff believes that if the QB prospects put in the work they can end up succeeding in the NFL.
“Yeah, you know, it’s going to be hard. It’s always a challenge making that transition and they’ll have their their hurdles they need to get through, but keep your head down, keep working, persevere, and usually that’ll help you come out on top.”
As for the Lions, Goff is going to let the team’s front office do all the work to figure out what they need to help the team succeed but wouldn’t mind picking up an extra receiver or two in the draft.
“You know I let them do their thing. They know they know who I like and who I’d like to have and they’ve got the whole team to build out and a lot more on their plate than I would know. So I just tell them, yeah, sure, I’ll take more receivers,
I’ll take more tight ends, running backs, O-line, whatever you guys want to give me on offense, I’ll take it all.”
While Goff has had ups and downs in his career, he seems to have found a home in Detroit and has enjoyed playing for the Lions’ fervent fanbase.
“Our fans are the best and that’s been one of the most rewarding parts about being able to win a little bit more than in the past, in the last couple of years is seeing our fans reaction and being able to be a part of it and see their response and how much fun they’re having.”
During NFL draft week Goff and Jared Jewelers teamed up to donate $50k to Give Merit, a Detroit-based nonprofit that helps Detroit youth receive college scholarships, as well as surprise three Lions fans with Breitling watches.
“Honoring Detroit with Jared Jewelers was a no brainer. This community and fanbase means so much to me, so I had to go to Jared to close out such an unbelievable season and show my love,” said Goff. “The Jared brand is iconic, and their heart is huge. We talked a lot about Detroit’s loyalty and how the city is built on the same drive, grit and determination that my teammates and I take onto the field every Sunday. Give Merit and these fans are so deserving of recognition.”
