As Elon Musk tries harder and harder with each passing day to kill off Twitter after spending spending some $44 billion to acquire it, tech developers are lining up to create the next big thing to replace it.
We’ve already seemingly seen the rise and fall of Mastodon. BlueSky has shown promise and some have found there way over to sites such as Spill.
But one new challenger appears to have a leg up on the competition.

That would be the latest from Meta czar Mark Zuckerburg and Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri. The new app, which is not available on desktop, is associated with Instagram and is a text-based social media platform aimed at being the replacement for Twitter.
Here’s what Mike Isaac of The New York Times had to say about the new app…
“Built by Instagram, Threads is positioned as an app where people can have real-time, public conversations with one another. Threads also helps boost Instagram, which is a marquee app in Meta’s family of products,” he began. “…Instagram has tied Threads closely to itself. Those interested in signing up for the new app are required to have an Instagram account for now. A user’s Instagram handle must also be their Threads user name.”
While the new platform is promising, it’s not without its flaws. As current, Threads does not allow you to only see those people you choose to follow on Twitter. The display is also a little bit wonky and there’s currently no native GIF function.
Still, those craving an alternative to Twitter flocked to the new app when it went live on Wednesday.

Ultimately, Twitter is still dominating the market space for text-based social media apps. And unless Musk completely runs it into the ground it will continue to be that way.
But it’s clear Zuckerberg is throwing his full weight behind the new project.
