There’s an absolutely massive market for memorabilia linked to notable names in the world of sports, whether we’re talking about trading cards, ticket stubs, game-worn apparel, or other artifacts at the center of iconic moments.
There are also plenty of diehard collectors out there who are constantly on the hunt for unique pieces associated with famous athletes as well as infamous ones—and it’s safe to say a driver’s license that formerly belonged to O.
J. Simpson would fall under that second umbrella.Earlier this year, O.J. Simpson passed away from prostate cancer at the age of 76—which is 41 years older than his ex-wife Nicole Brown was when she was murdered in 1994 by the unknown killer her former husband was never able to hunt down despite spending decades on the golf courses where he seemingly assumed the culprit would be found.
The reactions to Simpson’s death cemented the notion that he wouldn’t be remembered for what he achieved on the football field before his career was overshadowed by the trial that gripped America in the mid-1990s, and while I can’t say I’d be scrambling to shell out a bunch of money for the right to own some O.J. memorabilia, it would appear there are plenty of people who are.
Earlier this week, Goldin put a Florida driver’s license Simpson secured while he was residing in Miami in 2007 up for auction, and it didn’t take very long for a bidding war to unfold.
The license was listed with a starting price of $10, but as of this writing, 49 bids have been placed while driving up the top offer to $1,100 (which doesn’t include the buyer’s premium).
There’s no telling what will unfold by the time the auction concludes at 10 P.M. on June 6th, but based on how things are trending, it’s safe to assume that number will be significantly higher when everything is said and done.
