The NFL subjected New York Jets fans to some injury-related PTSD this week as they announced that the team would be kicking off their 2024 season with a Week 1 Monday Night Football matchup at the San Francisco 49ers, who are currently the sportsbooks’ betting favorites to win the Super Bowl.
Forgetting how talented the 49ers are, the reason that Jets fans are so terrified of a Week 1 Monday Night Football matchup is because that’s the exact scenario that saw quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffer a torn Achilles last season.
Given the difficulty of the opponent that is the defending NFC champions and the emotional/literal scars from last season, Jets fans are now legitimately calling for backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor to start against the 49ers.

When Rodgers made his New York Jets debut last season, his body held up for just 4 plays before collapsing to the MetLife Stadium turf with a torn Achilles. As such, Rodgers has yet to complete an official regular season pass for the Jets.
Taylor, 34 years old, is in his first season with the New York Jets and was brought in to replace Zach Wilson, now in Denver with the Broncos, as Gang Green’s backup signal-caller behind Rodgers.
Since being drafted out of Virginia Tech by the Baltimore Ravens in the 6th round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Taylor has played for the Ravens, Bills, Browns, Chargers, Texans, and Giants.
Despite his 13 years in the NFL, Taylor has logged just three seasons as a starting quarterback, which came in 2015, 2016, and 2017 with the Buffalo Bills.
When the Jets Week 1 Monday Night Football matchup does role around on Monday, September 9, it’ll surely be Rodgers behind center (so long as he’s healthy) as the Jets look to establish themselves as legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
Even if they aren’t able to beat San Fran, simply remaining competitive with the 49ers in such a raucous, hostile environment will likely be enough to make the team believe their championship-caliber.
