Lack Of Body Cam Footage From Scottie Scheffler Arrest Sparks Investigation Into LMPD, Mayor Says

Scottie Scheffler’s bizarre arrest at the PGA Championship was the biggest headline of the tournament. The world’s No. 1 golfer was cuffed and escorted to the station after what seemed to be a misunderstanding during a traffic stop.

Scheffler attempted to skirt past authorities at the scene of a fatal accident involving a tournament shuttle, following other competitors to the Valhalla Golf Club.

His car was stopped by police and a situation escalated.

Video was captured showing Scheffler being taken to the back of a cop car, forcing the tournament to delay his tee time. After a few hours in a cell, he returned to the course – where he played like a man on a mission with a Top 10 finish.

Scheffler was slapped with a quartet of charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer. Said officer wrote in the incident report that his $80 pants had been “damaged beyond repair” in the interaction.

While there is footage of the aftermath of the arrest, the body cam footage is mysteriously non-existent.

That lack of official police video is disturbing to Mayor Craig Greenberg.

He says an investigation into Scottie Scheffler’s arrest will be opened.

More from the Louisville Courier-Journal:

Louisville Metro Police will investigate whether officers followed the department’s policies in the arrest of the world’s No. 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler, Mayor Craig Greenberg said Tuesday.

“I think that’s critically important that we do that, not just in high profile events like took place on Friday, but on a regular basis,” Greenberg said at his weekly press conference. “And if policies are not being followed, there will be transparency about that. There will be action taken.”

“From my understanding, based on the facts I am aware of right now, I understand why body cam may not have been turned on at the initial contact between Officer [Bryan] Gillis and Mr. Scheffler,” he said. “I still have questions about why it was not on during Mr. Scheffler’s arrest.”

An LMPD arrest citation said Scheffler did not comply with an LMPD officer’s commands to stop his vehicle and “accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground.”

Most expect the charges to be dropped when all is said and done.
