Seattle Seahawks passer Geno Smith was not happy with a certain member of the media on Thursday who claimed his QB1 status was on “shaky ground” following the team’s signing of Sam Howell. He let his feelings be known with a quick repost on social media.
In fact, he called the ‘report’ a complete fabrication altogether, believing his starting role to be safe as the offseason marches on.
Howell was acquired by the franchise just over a month ago in a trade with the Washington Commanders. One key detail from that deal stood out.
While the front office was impressed with Howell’s production on the field, most notably in a head-to-head matchup in 2023 where he threw for 312 yards and three scores, the UNC product was brought in for depth – not to start.
“We were just really excited to be able to acquire him,” GM John Schneider said. “We know he’s a serious dude. He’s into it, he works his tail off. We got great reviews on him, and we loved him coming out of college. So yeah, we’re happy to get him in the mix. Geno’s the guy and Sam will be backing him up.”
John Frascella, who calls himself an NFL insider in his X bio, doesn’t believe that to be the case.
He posted an update to the QB race online this week, suggesting that Geno Smith‘s position on the depth chart isn’t set in stone.

He claims that Smith is on “shakier ground than people realize,” contradicting the GM’s previous position on the acquisition.
It didn’t take long for QB1 to respond.
“[You] just made this BS up,”
He then sent out a string of follow-up messages to vent those frustrations.
I’m calling y’all out from now on y’all lied all offseason!

Don’t expect the passer to become a part of that media he so clearly mistrusts!
I’ll never do media or podcast.

Geno Smith believes he’s going to be the starter when the 2024 season opens up, and that Sam Howell‘s addition has done nothing to put that status in danger.
That being said, he’ll look to follow up on another productive campaign that saw him surpass 3,500 passing yards for the second straight year.
