Deion Sanders Brags About Colorado Football’s Record-Setting Academic Achievement

When Colorado hired Deion Sanders to be the head football coach in December 2022, it was considered quite the experiment. While results were mixed in his first year on the field, as the Buffaloes went 4-8 after a 3-0 start, returns in the classroom have been pretty good.

So good, in  fact, that Colorado was bragging about their academic achievement on Twitter on Wednesday.

Take a look.

The Spring 2024 term saw the second-highest team GPA in Colorado football history, apparently. That does seem like something to cheer about, if it is indeed the second-highest semester GPA for the team ever.

But, maybe more impressive, or at least the more impressive selling point, is the fact that the team cumulative GPA is above a 3.0 for the first time. That’s a great accomplishment for this group of players, I guess.

That being said, I think a lof of people will be shocked to learn that the team has never had above a 3.0 GPA before. Being a Power 5 football player definitely comes with a huge time commitment, and that definitely makes it harder to get a really high GPA. For the team to have what amounts to a B average is pretty good.

Ultimately, though, the Deion Sanders tenure in Boulder will not be defined by how the players do in the classroom. It will come down to how they perform on the field. And, it seems like it’s bowl game or bust this year in Boulder.

He should have the horses to do it. Colorado, which will be back in the Big 12 after leaving in 2011, has the talent to make that happen. Coach Prime’s son, Shedeur, is considered by many to be the best quarterback in all of college football. And, two-way superstar Travis Hunter may be be the best player in the country. That alone could get them to six wins.

But, things could get away from them in a hurry. They start out the season on August 31 against North Dakota State. Yes, the Bison are FCS, but they are always really good and very physical. Physical teams gave Colorado fits last year. And, according to the Sagarin Computer Rankings, North Dakota State was actually better than Colorado last year. In week 2, they’e got to go to rival Nebraska, a team that should be much better. If they start out 0-2,  things can spiral quickly.
