The way that Joel McHale and the rest of the Community cast felt about veteran comedic actor Chevy Chase is no secret and well-documented.
Not only was Chase fired from the series after using a racial slur on set but much of the cast, McHale in particular, has spent the years since detailing just what a nightmare he was to work with.
McHale’s beef with Chase was so intense, in fact, that the former The Soup host recently revealed that he dislocated Chase’s shoulder during a physical altercation.
“It would get a little contentious. It would get to this point where I’m like, ‘Okay…’ I got in trouble one time because I injured him. I dislocated his shoulder,” McHale said when asked whether their altercations were physical or verbal while appearing on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast.
“He wanted me to punch him as hard as I could. I punched him in the hand with a left. Then he went down. It was an advanced horseplay,” he joked. “You know, horseplay, and then it always turned into sex. It wasn’t fun.”
Last year, Chase went on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast and said that he “didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people.” In response, McHale said that the feeling was “mutual.”
Yeah, well, feeling’s mutual about your attitude, and you didn’t have to be there,” McHale said. “This was not a prison sentence. We were not conscripted into a war. You were being paid a lot of money and getting free food all day long. So you could just walk away.”
Chase starred in the series as Pierce Hawthorne in seasons one through four before he was let go for allegedly using a racial slur.
As for the in-development Community movie, reports indicate that the long-awaited project — which will not include Chase but will include the rest of the original cast — will begin filming this year.
Earlier this year, Glover told Entertainment Tonight that the script, which apparently centers on a “college reunion”, is finished. Similarly, McHale told The Hollywood Reporter that the production is working around Glover’s busy schedule to accommodate the popular writer and actor.
