Governor Andy Beshear was one of the many excited to see the PGA Championship return to the Commonwealth of Kentucky as golfers and fans flooded Valhalla Golf Club to take in the major.
That excitement and exposure for the City of Louisville led Beshear to issue social media welcome for visitors.
It took less than 24 hours for that message to age, oh, so poorly. The PGA Championship returned to Valhalla for the first time in a decade, last seeing Rory McIlroy hoist the trophy at tournament’s end. McIlroy is in this year’s field, too, and he’s off to a hot start, but he’s not the golfer viewers were most eager to see.
That would be World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
The former Texas Longhorn has been on an absolute tear this season, already having won four tournaments across 10 starts. He’s finished in the Top 10 in nine of those events and seemed on his way to yet another top placement given his -4 start on Thursday.
Then, disaster.
Scheffler was arrested by the Louisville Police Department early Friday morning while attempting to make his way to the course.
A tragic accident occurred ahead of the second round of play when someone was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 AM. Attempting to skirt by traffic and make his way to the club, Scheffler reportedly drove around the incident.
Other golfers are said to have done the same, but Scottie Scheffler was the only to be stopped.
He was quickly detained, thrown in an orange jumpsuit, and smacked with a quartet of charges including second-degree assault of a police officer.
His tee time was pushed back, and after a lengthy delay, he finally made his way back to the course. He broke his silence on that arrest upon stepping foot onto the venue grounds, not seeming overly annoyed by the mix-up.
Still, it provided a major distraction as he looks to make another tournament run, and it strongly contradicted that
The eyes of the world are on our great Commonweath, once again. Let’s welcome them to our new Kentucky home with the kindness and hospitality we’re known for.

Talk about aging poorly!
A message of “kindness and hospitality” followed quickly by the bizarre arrest of golf’s No. 1 player.
Scottie Scheffler will attempt to put the incident behind him and get the focus back on the PGA Championship. The Kentucky governor will hope this is that last unforeseen hiccup of the weekend.
