Happy Gilmore is arguably Adam Sandler’s magnum opus, and it sounds like he’s gearing up to make a sequel close to 30 years after the original hit theaters.
Adam Sandler is still a very marketable name based on how many people have decided to check out one of the many projects he’s dropped on Netflix in recent years, but it’s pretty hard to argue any of those films hold a candle to the comedic classics he was responsible for in the 1990s.
Sandler dropped Billy Madison the same year Saturday Night Live kicked him to the curb in 1995, and while that was a pretty tough act to follow, he arguably outdid himself in 1996 courtesy of Happy Gilmore, the tale of an aspiring hockey player who turns the golf world on its head while embarking on a quest to save his grandmother’s house.
As you likely know, the eponymous golfer quickly finds himself embroiled in a bitter feud with Shooter McGavin, the character who is practically synonymous with Christopher McDonald (an actor with more than 200 projects on his résumé but who is almost exclusively known for portraying the villain in Happy Gilmore).
On Friday, McDonald phoned into The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima for a conversation where he shared a very juicy piece of information concerning a recent encounter with the Sandman, saying:
“I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he says, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ He shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2…
So it’s in the works. Fans demand it…When I saw that, I was very, very pleased.”
Movies (especially comedies) that get a sequel decades after the release of a beloved original usually leave plenty to be desired, and while I’d like to think Happy Gilmore 2 would be an exception, I’d be lying if I said I think that will end up being the case.
With that said, it’s very hard to imagine Netflix wouldn’t be more than happy to pull the trigger if presented with the opportunity, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how things pan out.
