Perhaps coincidentally, perhaps tellingly, Scoot McNairy has been in two of the best movies of Ben Affleck’s career — David Fincher’s Gone Girl and the Best Picture-winning Argo, which Affleck directed, therefore meaning he had a direct hand in hiring McNairy.
After McNairy featured in Argo‘s ensemble cast alongside Affleck, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, and more in 2012, McNairy then co-starred with Affleck two years ago in Fincher’s beloved thriller Gone Girl.
In Gone Girl (spoiler warning!
) Affleck plays the dimwitted and obtuse yet innocent and tortured husband of Rosamund Pike’s Amy Dunne. McNairy, on the other hand, plays one of Amy’s ex-boyfriends, who also had his fair share of battle scars from his relationship with her. While McNairy is in just one scene, he does most of the heavy lifting as the moment is him largely recounting the hellish time he had with “Amazing Amy”. His scene was so focused on his Tommy character, in fact, that when filming it, Affleck was able to nod off.
Speaking to BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast ahead of the release of his new film Blood For Dust — in theaters and digital on April 19 — McNairy laughed through the story of Affleck catching a few Zs while the pair were making Gone Girl, a movie directed by the notoriously rigid Fincher.
“He [Fincher] does do a lot of takes, which I like and I enjoy just going and going and going,” McNairy began.
“But that said, it’s me talking pretty much the whole time [to Ben]. Ben doesn’t say anything, so… eventually he fell asleep. And, you know, he’s tired, he’s working long days and stuff, so I… it was me just running my mouth and so I just looked over one time and saw that Ben was kind of dozing off — didn’t both me at all! But I look back on it and think, that was such an [chuckles]… an interesting moment.”
